Obituary

Dora Barbara Riley Thorne passed away Thursday November 14, 2019 at Whittier Nursing Facility, Ghent NY.

She was born in Norwich NY on August 18,1920 to  Paul Riley and his wife Lotta Mable Bowers.

During WWII she entered the Marine Corps and served as a draftsman at Quantico VA.

She married William Thorne Jr. on September 21, 1946. They were married for 68 years until his death in 2014.

For many years they operated Thornecrest Poultry Farm in Chatham. Upon retirement they divided their time between Chatham and North Ft. Myers FL., spending leisure time playing tennis, golf  and camping across the country

Dodie, as she was known, was a graduate of Pratt Institute and had a BFA from SUNY Albany. Art was her life long interest. She did and taught ceramics. Painting especially miniatures was her main interest.

She was a member of Chatham United Methodist Church, Post 42 American Legion and the Hendrick Hudson Chapter NSDAR.

She was predeceased by her parents, and brothers Charles and William Riley. She is survived by her sons William Stephen [Alaine] of Chatham, Jonathan of St. Petersburg FL. Additionally she leaves grandchildren Lara [Thomas] Gonser of Chatham,  William C. [Sara] Thorne of Forest City NC, and her great-granddaughter Kayleigh Thorne of Forest City.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Chatham United Methodist Church, or The Hendrick Hudson Chapter NSDAR.

Arrangements are under the direction Wenk Funeral Home for burial in the spring. An Announcement will be made.
