Edna Iverson Kuster Edna Iverson Kuster, a past resident of Canaan, NY and Slingerlands, NY died on February 4, 2011 at the age of 97. Born November 28, 1913, in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, NY, she was one of five daughters of the late Ferdinand Iverson and Mary Isabel (Latimer) Iverson, all of whom predeceased her. For 68 years, she was the devoted wife of Gene Francis Kuster, who predeceased her in 2008. She received a Registered Nursing degree in 1934 from the New York Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY. She continued her education in public health at the University of Minnesota and at Columbia Teachers College in NYC. She worked for the Visiting Nurses Association of Brooklyn and pictures of her in nursing uniform were used on posters and brochures, publicizing the organization. After her marriage in 1940, she continued using her nursing skills as a lifelong volunteer for the American Red Cross. Among Her experiences, She headed the Red Cross emergency relief effort for one thousand travelers stranded on the Tappan Zee Bridge in Tarrrytown, N.Y. during a severe 1969 snowstorm. Edna met her future husband Gene when both were teenagers and active members of the Lefferts Park Baptist Church in Brooklyn, They raised three children, starting in Brooklyn and then in Tarrytown, NY where they lived for 26 years. They also had a second home in Canaan, NY starting in 1945 and where they lived after retirement from 1975 to 1993. Together, they were residents from 1993-2008 in the Beverwyck retirement community, Slingerlands, NY where Edna resided until July 2010. Edna was an active member of the Second Reformed Church in Tarrytown and the Canaan Congregational Church and loved singing in their Choirs. Among her volunteer activities, she was a Girl Scout leader for her daughter's troop and a Den mother for her son's cubscout troop in Tarrytown. During the 1950's and early 1960's in the summertime she managed the family's Canaan home as a Bed and Breakfast for overnight guests. She also loved traveling, and in addition to the many trips she and her husband took to Europe, the Mediterranean countries, and Scandinavia on their own, they attend over 50 Elderhostel programs in the United States, Canada, and England. Edna is survived by her son Gordon and daughter-in-law Sandi of Stephentown, NY; her daughter Carole (Kuster) Wortley and son-in-law James Wortley of Ypsilanti, MI; her daughter Joan and son-in-law Mark Weintraub of Kinderhook, NY; a granddaughter Cheryl (Kuster) Clarke and her husband Kevin of Mechanicsville, VA; a grandson Steven Kuster and his wife Kim of Williamstown, MA; her five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family wishes to thank the caregivers who gave her love and attention in her last years. A private family service at graveside in the Canaan, NY cemetery will be held in the spring when she is interred.
