Obituary

George N Hoover IV passed away surrounded by his loving family and closest friends on August 13, 2024.

George was born on May 9, 1957 to the late Patricia and George N Hoover III. He was also predeceased by his step-mother Lynn Strunk.

George had a long and well known career in this area, first employed by Bervy Equipment for 5 years, followed by E.G Simmons & Son Heating Oil. From there he went to work for Agway Energy for 17 years as a driver and mechanic. After his retirement from the oil and propane field, he started George Hoover Excavating which he ran until his death.

George was also known for his volunteering spirit in the community serving in every office from Chief to President with the Red Rock Volunteer Fire Company for 47 years. He was also Past President of the Columbia County Volunteer Fire Chiefs' Association as well as the Columbia County Fire Advisory Board. He was a founding member and long time Co-Captain of the Columbia County HazMat Team and instrumental in establishing the County Foam Bank that continues to service the Volunteer Fire Service to this day.

He was also one of the Volunteer Fire Services biggest supporters, attending nearly any and all fundraisers and functions not only in his home department but throughout the county. He is an Honorary Member of the Chatham Fire Department for more than 35 years. His presence will be greatly missed at the Annual Old Forge Fireschool.

He had a great love of local restaurants and those who knew him always knew where to find him on a given day, whether that be the White Stone Cafe, Valatie Main Street Diner or one of his many other favorite establishments.

George was a life time member of the Columbia County Fair and enjoyed his time spent maintaining the grounds as part of the track crew with his equipment.

George is survived by his wife Sharon and daughter Patricia Lynn, stepdaughter Crystal Turner and granddaughter Shauna Turner; step sisters Aimee Strunk (Renault) and Mary Strunk and many cousins. He is also survived by his many close friends and fire department family. We will all miss his jovial smile and unwavering loyalty (AND STUFF!) In his own words that we will miss hearing and are forever endeared in our hearts… "Bye Now!"
