Hansel H. Schober, a beloved figure in the Austerlitz community, passed away peacefully at the age of 78. Born in Rye, NY, on June 11, 1945, he moved with his family to a small farm in Austerlitz. After graduating from Ockawamick High School in 1963, he pursued higher education at Cornell University, earning a B.S. in Agricultural Science. Returning to the family farm, he worked alongside his parents as a full-time dairyman, expanding the farm where he would later raise his own family.

In 1970, Hans met Rosemarie, and their love blossomed. They married on August 14, 1971, and welcomed their first son in June 1972. Hans was deeply committed to his family and his community, serving as a volunteer firefighter, a member of the Austerlitz Town Board, and dedicating 22 years to the Taconic Hills School Board. More recently Hans participated in various famer's markets around the area, where his warm presence and storytelling endeared him to everyone he met. The ultimate family man, Hans (and Rose) would take the time each summer to pile all 7 kids in the truck, camping around the US on vacation. He never missed their many sporting events, school plays, or music concerts; was there every morning to send the kids off to school. Despite his continuous work throughout his life, Hansel remained well-read and engaged with global events. His legacy lives on through the memories he created and the impact he had on his community.

Hans was predeceased by his parents, Henry J. Schober and Martha (Mader) Schober and his son John Henry. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rosemarie Schober, and 7 children; Matt (Lisa) Schober, David (Tracy) Schober, Christopher (Jennifer) Schober, Suzanne (Richard) Riley, Stephen (Meg) Schober, Deborah (Christopher) Wren, Samantha (Marc) Lovett as well as 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, his sister Gretel (Frank) Bachelor and his many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

Family and friends may call at the Wenk Funeral Home on Thursday 6/6 from 4-7pm.
