Obituary

SIMPKINS, Harriet Elizabeth Miller Simpkins, age 85 died on September 13, 2015. Born on January 2, 1930 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late William J Miller and Dorothy Heald Miller Atkins. Harriet was a graduate of Berne Knox Westerlo High School and attended State Teachers College at Albany. She owned HMS Real Estate in Chatham for many years and later was a part time library aide at the Chatham Central School library. She enjoyed music, reading, knitting and volunteering at the Ghent Pantry. She was the first woman member of the Northern Columbia County Rotary Club and also its first woman president. She was a 50 plus year member of the Chatham Reformed Church and later was a member of the Kinderhook Reformed Church. She is survived by four children: Gary (Bonnie) Simpkins of Kinderhook, Deborah (Michael) Spaulding of Stuyvesant, Scott Simpkins of Kinderhook and Terry Simpkins of Middlebury, Vermont. Four grandchildren: Krystal Manuel of Massachusetts, Audrey Simpkins of Philadelphia, Adam Spaulding of North Reading, MA and Aaron Simpkins of Buffalo. She also had two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of nearly 40 years, Alvah Willis Simpkins. There will be no calling hours, a memorial service will be held Friday, September 25, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Wenk Funeral Home in Chatham. A reception at the Kinderhook Reformed Church will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to the Kinderhook Reformed Church, Church Improvement fund , 21 Broad Street, Kinderhook, N.Y. 12016 or the Ghent Food Pantry c/o Ghent Town Hall, Rte. 66, Ghent, NY 12075.
