James J. Costigan, 87, beloved husband of Karen peacefully passed on January 13, 2015, at home under the care of Hospice. Born in Brockport, he was the son of the late James Sr. and Mary (Mae) Costigan. James earned a Bachelor of Science and Master Degree from the University of Brockport, NY. James served in the Army Infantry Division as a Corporal during the Korean War and received a United Nations SVC Medal, Combat INF Badge as well as others. James was a past member of the American Legion and VFW. James was a lifelong educator and community supporter. He first came to Chatham in 1958 to works as the Elementary Principal at the Chatham Central School District. During the course of his career he was appointed as Assistant Supervising Principal along with Mary E. Dardess and went on to become the Superintendent of Schools until his retirement in 1983. James was also inducted into the Chatham High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his instrumental work in developing the local sports programs and playing facilities. He encouraged the formation of the Booster Club and PTA to help parents have a voice in the school's activities and continued throughout his life to be an avid sports supporter. James was also concerned about being an advocate for the improvement of school policy and practices. He fulfilled these efforts by serving on the NYS Council of School District Administrators, Legislative Committee. In addition to his duties at school, James served on many committees to support and make improvements in our community. Among these committees, James served on the Salvation Army Empire State Division, Chatham Service Unit, was an Executive Committee Member on the Youth Advisory Board for the Columbia County Youth Bureau, and an Advisory Council Member for the American Lung Association of NYS Dutchess-Columbia Branch. Survivors include his Wife Karen (Sandvik)of 60 years, children Cindy Dodge, Kim Costigan and Susan Nelson. James was the proud grandfather of Cara, Ethan, Jenna and Marisa, and the great-grandfather of JessieJean, Decker and Camila. He was predeceased by his only sibling, Margaret C. Rudman. Calling hours will be held at the Wenk Funeral Home Friday Jan. 16th 3 - 6pm . A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Jan. 17, 10:00 at Saint James Church, Chatham, NY.
