James John O'Neill of Philmont passed away Thursday at his home surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jim was born on December 13, 1961, in Hackensack, New Jersey, to Frances Armbruster O'Neill and John "Jack" O'Neill. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to Pompano Beach, Florida. He graduated from Pompano Beach High School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, with a minor in Education, from the University of Florida in 1983.Following graduation, Jim returned to his alma mater, Pompano Beach High School, where he began his teaching career at the age of 21. That same year, he met the love of his life, Caroline. The two were married in 1984 and built a life centered on family, education, and service to others. While living in Florida, Jim and Caroline welcomed their sons, Tristan James O'Neill and Andrew Christopher O'Neill. In 1993, the family moved to New York, where they later welcomed daughters Emily Frances O'Neill and Annabel Rose O'Neill. As their family grew, Jim continued doing what he loved most—teaching.

He spent nearly 10 years teaching high school mathematics in the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District while earning his Master's Degree from SUNY Albany before joining the Taconic Hills Central School District, where he taught middle school mathematics for 16 years. He retired in 2018 after 35 years of shaping young minds and inspiring generations of students. Nothing brought Jim greater joy than being a husband, father, and grandfather (Pop). Jim will be remembered for his intelligence, patience, humor, unwavering integrity, and his gift for making people feel supported and understood. Whether in the classroom, at home, or in his community, he approached life with kindness, dedication, humor, and a genuine care for others. An avid tennis player, Jim spent countless hours on the court enjoying the game he loved. Jim spent numerous hours playing with his best friend Leif, two evenly matched opponents never knowing who would win. Whether competing in matches, playing with friends, or sharing the sport with family, tennis brought him great joy throughout his life. The game reflected many of the qualities that defined him—discipline, perseverance, sportsmanship, and a competitive spirit.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Caroline O'Neill; his children, Tristan O'Neill (Grace), Andrew O'Neill (Melissa), Emily Ryan (Stefan), and Annabel O'Neill (Samuel Richter); his cherished grandchildren, Honor, Addison, Jackson, Jason, Brooks, Soleil, Riley, and Cooper; his mother, Frances M. O'Neill; his sisters, Maureen Brady (Michael), Elaine Graham (Jeff), and Kathleen McGrath (Brian); and numerous nieces, and nephews.He was predeceased by his father, John "Jack" O'Neill, and his granddaughter, Ali Jessica O'Neill-Richter. Jim's legacy lives on in the countless students he taught, the family he loved so deeply, and the example he set through a life of service, perseverance, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. In celebration of Jim's life and in honor of his pride as a graduate of the University of Florida, family and friends are invited to wear orange and blue to the service.  Jim's family is asking in lieu of flowers, donations to Taconic Hills Little League.
