Obituary

Mary Ann Engel, 70 years old, of Ghent passed away on May 22nd in Hudson. She was surrounded by her loving husband of 53 years, her children, and grandchildren. She was born on July 19th 1943 in Watervliet to James and Edith (Rich) Simmons. Raised in Chatham, she graduated from Chatham High School in 1961. She married her childhood sweetheart on August 26th 1961 and lived together in Ghent for most of their married life. Mary Ann worked at the Chatham Milk House where she and the band of merry women managed to serve and entertain all who entered. She also enjoyed her career as a manager at the B.H. Delson's department store where if they didn't have it, you didn't need it. A prominent figure about town, Mary Ann was involved in a number of school and community organizations. She was most proud of her involvement in raising money to save the sports program at Chatham High School in the early 80's. Mary Ann will be remembered for her ability to engage anyone, her generosity, and love of the underdog, but she will best be remembered for a sense of humor that would engulf all around her. She will be sorely missed by many, particularly her husband Stanley T. Engel, daughter Kelly Harrison (David), son Michael Engel (Anna). Survivors include her brother James Simmons, Robert Simmons, and Linda Simmons. Her grandchildren Daniel Harrison, Lee Harrison, Adam Harrison, Emily Engel, Jessica Scharoun, and Lisa Gramling. Her great-grandchildren Maddie & Max Gramling and Abagail Scharoun will miss her as well. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 12:00pm from the St James R.C. Church Chatham. Burial will be in the West Ghent Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday evening 5 - 7pm from the Wenk Funeral Home Chatham. Memorials may be made to the Columbia County Community Healthcare Consortium Inc. 325 Columbia St. Hudson, New York 12534 For on-line condolences visit wenkfuneralhome.com
