Obituary

Robert G. (Red) Kern, of Austerlitz, NY, passed away at Timberlyn Heights Nursing Home in Gt. Barrington, Ma. On October 4, 2015, at the age of 91. Red was born April 20, 1924, at the family farm in Austerlitz, NY where he grew up. He graduated Chatham High School in 1942. He joined the US Army in 1944 serving in WWII in France and Italy and was discharged in 1947. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve until 1951. Red married Charity Bevens on March 10, 1949 and they stayed happily married 66 years until his death. He worked for the Town of Austerlitz Road department many years before going to work for the State of New York Highway Department where he retired as an equipment operator in 1990. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, a life member of VFW Post 5933 in Ghent, NY, and had been a member of the Austerlitz Volunteer Fire Company. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and spending time with his family. Red is survived by his wife Charity, 2 sons George of Topeka, Ka. and James of Sheffield, Ma., 4 grandchildren Traci, Belinda, Cody, and Jasmine, and 4 great grandchildren Zachary, Rachel, Sarah, and Jaydn. He was preceded in death by his stepfather and mother, Cornelius and Gladys Rockenstyre. There is no public service as it was his wish for a private graveside service with immediate family at a later date. The family greatly appreciates all the prayers and support of family and friends through this difficult time.
