Rodney Bull

Father, Buddhist, Skier, Surfer, Adventurer, Carpenter, Photographer, Avid Reader and self taught Writer and Bar Stool Philosopher.

Rodney Bull, of East Chatham, New York, died on September 21, 2026, in Spencertown, New York in an accident. Born in Catherham, Surry, United Kingdom, in 1940, his life primarily spanned three countries, leaving a lasting impact on so many he encountered. Rod could reliably be found at the local coffee shop, pub, library, ski mountain or beach wherever he was in his global wanderings, discussing buddhist philosophy, particle physics, UK beat culture, or whatever was on his mind.

He was a long time resident of East Chatham, when he was not somewhere else on earth soaking up the sun, skiing, windsurfing, building or taking photographs. Prior to relocating to East Chatham in 1982 to raise his family, Rod lived in the United Kingdom through his twenties, before relocating to Australia. While in Australia, Rod divided his time between working in the family record store, cutting sugar cane and surfing the best waves on the continent. Rod returned to London where he met Wendy Stewart, the mother of his children, Arabella and Joel.

Growing up in London during World War II Rod was a Blitz Baby who always loved his butter and sugar after being deprived of them during the war. Rod often recounted the bombing of London by V1 doodlebugs and V2 rockets, and then exploring their burned out hulls with his brother.

Rod is survived by his son Joel Stewart, daughter Arabella Bull-Stewart, granddaughter Amélie McCue and son in law Ryan McCue.

A memorial service will be held for Rod at 12 noon Saturday October 10th at the Tendai Buddhist Dharma center, 1525 rte 295, East Chatham NY. All are welcome at the Dharma Center and for a potluck in East Chatham following the memorial service. We invite you to share stories of Rod, or some of your favorites he told, listen to some of his favorite music, eat some of his favorite foods, and maybe even dance, as he loved to do.
