Stephen V. Langer of Red Rock died at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany on September 22 of complications from kidney disease. He was born February 14, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York to Benjamin and Julia Batchker Langer and grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, graduating from Forest Hills High School in 1953. Steve studied engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and at City University in New York City where he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. In his professional career Steve worked in New York City as an independent computer systems and management consultant and also held management positions at Sperry Rand Corporation, Citibank, Elsevier Science Publishing Company, and Covansys. Always a great believer in community service, he helped found the Harborfields Public Library in Greenlawn, NY in the late 1960's, serving on the Library's Board of Trustees and as the Board's president. He later served on the Board of Trustees of the Suffolk County Cooperative Library System and as the President of the Nassau Suffolk Counties Library Trustees Association. When Steve and his wife Linda purchased an old farmhouse in Red Rock 28 years ago, he continued his community service as a volunteer fireman and also was active as a board member of the Red Rock Historical Society, the Friends of the Chatham Public Library, and The Chatham Film Club. Steve served on the Austerlitz Zoning Commission from 2006-2008 and helped to create the first zoning ordinance for the township. He also compiled and edited "Charlie Briggs: Remembrances of Red Rock, Its Places and Its People", a booklet about Red Rock in the early 1900's that was based on the reflections of Charlie Briggs, a dear friend. Steve was known for his logical mind, his offbeat sense of humor, his wonderful photographs, his woodworking talent and his love of sports. He is survived by his wife Linda, his sons Richard and Gary, four granddaughters and one great granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at Wenk's Funeral Home in Chatham on Sunday, September 29 at 2:00 pm.
